UPJS succeeded in the Recovery Plan with the SUNFLOWERS project

Kosice, August 5, 2025

The Faculty of Science of Pavol Jozef Safarik University (UPJS) in Kosice, in collaboration with domestic and international partners, has successfully secured support for the international research project SUNFLOWERS (Development and Design of Sustainable Composite Materials for Hybrid Energy Storage System Based on Li-Ion and Redox-Flow Batteries). The project is funded under the largest call of Slovakia’s Recovery Plan in the field of research, development, and innovation, through the Research and Innovation Authority.

The aim of the project is to develop new, safe, and sustainable materials for modern battery technologies and their integration into a hybrid energy storage system. The research focuses on combining lithium-sulfur (Li-S) and redox-flow batteries, which represent a promising alternative to current lithium-ion systems.

The SUNFLOWERS project focuses on:
- developing new composite materials with improved safety, stability, and energy density,
- enhancing the recyclability and sustainability of battery cells,
- testing and validating prototypes of hybrid batteries,
- strengthening research infrastructure for battery technologies in the Eastern Slovak region,
- educating new experts in energy storage through courses, training sessions, and workshops.

The project coordinator is Assoc. Prof. RNDr. Andrea Strakova Fedorkova, PhD. (UPJS), Chair of the Slovak Battery Alliance (SBaA), with technical coordination provided by Pavol Jozef Safarik University. The project also involves the Slovak Academy of Sciences, InoHub, and Fecupral, as well as international partners Aalborg Universitet (Denmark), J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry, CAS (Czech Republic), and the National Institute of Chemistry (Slovenia).
Within the project, the Slovak Battery Alliance oversees communication, awareness-raising, and educational activities aimed at both professionals and the general public.

The SUNFLOWERS project will run for 30 months and started in 2025. The kick-off meeting was held on 5 August 2025 at UPJŠ in Košice.

The project’s results are expected to bring breakthroughs in battery technologies – from improved safety and efficiency to more environmentally friendly production and recycling.
